How to practice speaking when you have no one to talk to

You’re not alone—millions of learners struggle to find conversation partners. Classes are expensive, friends might not speak your target language, and it’s easy to put off speaking until “someday.” Here’s how to get real speaking practice without a tutor or a trip abroad.

Use your voice, not just your eyes

Reading and listening are important, but they don’t train your mouth and brain to produce speech. Make a rule: every day, say something out loud in your target language. It can be one sentence or five minutes. The key is producing sound, not just understanding it.

Practice with scenarios

Instead of free-form chat right away, pick a situation: ordering coffee, asking for directions, a job interview. Prepare a few phrases, then say them out loud—to an app, a mirror, or a recording. Scenarios give you structure and make it easier to measure progress.

Try an AI conversation partner

Apps like Speekeezy let you speak and get spoken replies. You choose a scenario, talk in your target language, and the AI responds. It’s not a replacement for human conversation, but it’s available anytime and doesn’t judge. That makes it easier to practice consistently.

Keep it regular

Short, frequent practice beats long, rare sessions. Even 5–10 minutes a day of actual speaking will add up. Schedule it like exercise: same time, same place, and don’t skip two days in a row.

Speaking is a skill. The only way to get better is to do it—and you can start today, even without a single conversation partner.
